Quake Champions?

@Amerika any thoughts from a Quake vet like you?

So far it looks much better than that awful Halo inspired DOOM multiplayer beta I've played (To hell with these gamebreaking demonic transformations!). The speed is something I dig, the whole class based system could appeal to me, since I suck at Arena Shooters with these item pickups, heavily advanced movement and map control.

I can understand vets frustration of class system and loadouts.
Let's hope modding will be available to adjust gameplay at any will, so that Arena Shooters vets and lack of talents like me can be happy.

However it's still Bethesda, don't overhype it and take it with a grain of salt.

Gonna be keeping my eye on it.

I am actually all for it. It's not a main line Quake game so I don't expect it to be a repeat of Q3 (which Q4 already was). I didn't really play Quake Wars but apparently a lot of people did and they enjoyed it. So I am OK with a "hero shooter" spin-off title like what they are advertising this to be. It looks like it's going to mash a lot of Quake weapons and movement into some kind of class system. They did announce that players will have starting weapons per character but can pick up other weapons which is kind of an interesting. I also like characters having special abilities.

The only thing I truly wanted was for them to not strip out skill based movement mechanics and not include a ton of auto-aim stuff. And so far it looks like they have not.

I do laugh at the trailer though being played intentionally sloppy as not to scare people off. That one "speed" section for about 1.5 seconds that showed off what appeared to be Quake World style movement would be a bit much for a lot of people to NOPE out of it instantly even if they were interested. So a sly move by the devs to make sure players like me know what the game can do from that 1.5 seconds while also not scaring off potential new players.

I was pretty disappointed that they didn't stream that match that the people at Quakecon got to see. Apparently somebody put it up on Reddit/Youtube but it was taken down already :( I'd would have liked to have seen what the game was like when the players are well versed with Quake mechanics.

Honestly, if it has Matchmaking like CS GO, public servers by the community, and it's not some class based shooter, I think I may move on to this game....Overwatch SEVERLY disappointed me, I'm hoping this and Lawbreakers will not.
So hey, I have a small guide here you may like, go ahead, read it, you know you want to.

Quake Champions is a class based shooter. However, I think it's going for classes more like what Lawbreakers is doing where there are no medics and everyone is an offensive specialist in some way. At least from what I've seen so far.

Also, Lawbreakers alpha has been going on for a while with tons of keys to be had. You should try the game out! It's in a decent state right now despite it still being an obvious Alpha. I've got almost 40 hours of server time so far and I've had fun. Your individual skill definitely carries a team way more in LB than it can in OW.

  • Just be careful of UE4 engine, it's very unstable.

Had FPS drops even on the lowest settings, and I'm on GTX 960 GPU.

The upside of UE4 is that it scales extremely well with your GPU and will use all of it unlike UE3. The downside is that it bumps up your GPU requirements pretty significantly. Lawbreakers FPS has been pretty stable. I've never gotten any stutters or anything like that. But it did make me replace a GTX 780 with a GTX 1070 in my FPS machine so that I could stop playing at low spec so I could get 144FPS.

^I run a GTX 760 and I get a perfectly stable 144FPS in UT4 with most graphics on low except for the resolution. LawBreakers on the other hand is between 80-100 with everything low and even the resolution down to 600p, plus in the last build I got long ass loading times and occasional freezes...

Ever since they decided to shag QL players I've had a bit of an itch for an arena shooter. Reflex does me pretty well but there's something about Quake Champions that irks me which I can't quite place. I want to have faith in it but I don't really trust anything in 2016 that remakes or reboots something treasured and claims to be going back to the roots. Considering the new DOOM game doesn't even have a proper map editor or any intention to release one and how flaccid the MP is I really struggle to think that id can pull this off. Maybe that's just me being cynical.

    Hopefully it is good.

Speaking of comebacks and remakes... You think Bethesda ever make the next ET: Wolfenstein? Not talking about New Order, but a standalone multiplayer.

Will Bethesda seek revenge after SD leaving them for Brink fiasco?

Given that they seem to be on a spree of revisiting IP I don't think it's impossible. In fact, if they took this vaguely hero based Quake Champions thing and made it objective based it'd probably be really fun

Here's to hoping they make a new Enemy Territory

Necroing this a bit as we're now getting drip fed some really (really) awful gameplay videos of this and.....I'm not sure. I feel conflicted :S Campgrounds looks cool, in fact the maps overall look pretty spectacular.

The guys at arenafps commented on how the player models are difficult to identify at the moment especially once you add in all the extra visual noise of explosions and the likes. They've also started talking more about the abilities.

Is it unfair/prejudice of me to already be hoping there's a game mode without the character abilities? What do you guys think?

Maybe open beta will launch a month before the release.
Then we can tell, whether abilities break the game or not. The ability aspect is more suited in objective based game modes, with roles to fill.

The lack of marketing and keeping gameplay secret raises some eyebrows.

I have always thought that dirty bomb is enemy territory remake (quite similar features). Why should Bethesda want to remake game which they did not create?

Well enemy territory: quake wars was much closer to wolfenstein: enemyterritory or dirty bomb if you want than to any original quake game. But it was a blast no doubt about that. :)

Speaking of classes and arena shooter, Lawbreakers just got a beta test this weekend, at the time of this post.

No matter how much I try, I can't get into Lawbreakers, for some reason.
This time they added more classes, like Gunslinger, Medic, Vanguard, etc. However teamplay is almost non-existent, some classes are more powerful than other, the ultimates are questionable, whether they are cheap kills or not. Not sure if the whole team aspect works in arena shooter genre. Maybe it's still an alpha, and everything's messy, regarding balance and performance.
Honestly it's not something I'd pay to play, that plus the fact Nexon publishing the game doesn't provide bright future.

Bumpy again, since it's available in closed beta, through Bethesda launcher.

Not sure if I wanna download the game. I'm still stuck with not so great CPU (AMD FX-8350, I do plan to get i7 7700k + new MoBo later this year or so).

So how's it goin'? Worth the hype? Or is it DOOM multiplayer 2.0 Electric Boogaloo?

It's really fun, much more raw and traditional than Doom is since you can pickup everything. But yea, the champions thing is pretty meh. I would have been fine with reborn Quake Live to be honest, with skins, ranked and pubs, etc.

So hey, I have a small guide here you may like, go ahead, read it, you know you want to.
